Grass Silage

Make the most of your forages by using Britmilk additives.

Biological additives consist of blends of bacteria and enzymes. These bacteria are selected to speed up the rate of fermentation of the grass into silage. This rapid fermentation reduces the time available for the undesirable bacteria and other organisms present on the grass to spoil and reduce the nutrient availability.

Maximise your investment in Britmilk biological silage additives by ensuring good management practices are followed.

  • Grass contaminated by soil/slurry or containing high levels of nitrogen/crude protein can all adversely affect fermentation.
  • Ensure accurate and even application. This is particularly important because of the enormous difference in weight i.e. 25-50% between trailer loads of lush unwilted grass and grass wilted to 25-30% dry matter.
  • Ensure barrels are properly cleaned before use to prevent contamination.
  • Ensure the pit is properly rolled during filling.
  • Biological additives should be stored away from direct sunlight and vermin, in a cool, dry environment to ensure optimum viability.

Britmilk Biological additives are all GMO free products and are all suitable for organic farming systems.

Bio-Ferm Gold

Bio-Ferm Gold is one of the best selling inoculants in the UK and Ireland. It is a unique combination of multi-strain bacteria.

This unique combination of lactic acid bacteria producing bacteria are able to quickly dominate the less efficient natural bacteria present on grass. This domination produces a rapid fermentation with a stable pH achieved in 24 hours. Bio-Ferm Gold will help to drive feed efficiency, stability and lower the carbon footprint in animal production.

Bio-Ferm Gold is using ONLY homofermentative bacteria with their unique ability to convert sugars to lactic acid with minimal loss. Bio-Ferm Gold also contains enzymes which release additional sugars in challenging conditions in order for bacteria to complete the fermentation.

Efficiency through selection.

Bio-Ferm Gold`s unique combination of bacteria brings together the tried and tested bacteria used for over 30 years plus new INNOVATIVE STRAINS that produce bacteriocins. Bacteriocins have specific anti-microbial properties, restricting the growth of yeasts (heating), moulds (toxins) and enterobacteria/ clostridium bacteria (loss of sugars/proteins).

Benefits of fast fermentation.

  • Improving feed efficiency by retaining more protein in its true form with reduced concentration of free amino acids.
  • Standard silage analysis does not show the real effect of fermentation on true protein %. It is for this reason that inoculated silages perform significantly better even though the standard chemical analysis appears unchanged.
  • Lactic acid in silage will direct rumen fermentation towards propionate, which in turn will reduce methane production (green house gas). Lower methane leads to greater efficiency.

Extensive trials have given:

  • Reduction of over 20% in effluent
  • Dry Matter Losses in effluent down by 30%
  • Total ensiling losses reduced by over 27% equal to over 50 tonnes more silage per every 1000 tonnes of forage ensiled. Worth over £1400 (silage at £28 per tonne) or Extra feeding for 5-6 cows

Bio-Ferm Gold
is available for both liquid or granular application. Bio-Ferm Gold (liquid) is packed in easy to use bottles. Each bottle treats 100 tonnes of fresh forage. It can be applied from 10mls to 2 litres per tonne. Specialist applicators are required for very low volume applications.

Benefits.

  • Can be mixed at higher concentrations to suit lower application rates for high output self propelled machines ?
  • Low application means less time changing barrels ?
  • Remains stable for 2 days after mixing ?
  • Non corrosive

Bio-Ferm Gold is available to apply as; Granular in 20kg bags @ 400 gm per tonne treating 50 tonne. Liquid in 500 gm sachets and apply at 1 litres per tonne treating 50 tonnes.

Multi-Sile

Multi-Sile is the first of a new generation of additive to meet the challenges of modern forages for high genetic merit cows. Multi-Sile combines the tried and tested bacteria in Bioferm Gold plus the new innovative bacteria of UltraCool which have the ability to enhance and maintain freshness of forage both at the face and in the trough.

Rapid fall in pH is vital in three ways

  • Retention of true protein from grass into silage
  • To retain maximum nutrients from grass into silage
  • Preserve those nutrients in the most palatable form in order to maximise intake.

It is designed to be applied at a wide range of application rates from 10ml to 2 litres. Based on the well proven concept of Bio-Ferm Gold and Ultra-Cool this product has proved to be a very useful addition to the Britmilk range of additives.

Stay-Cool

Stay-Cool: contains nitrites (food preservative) which breakdown to form a gas which penetrates throughout the clamp. This gas restricts the growth of undesirable organisms (enterobacteria/clostridial) thus preserving more proteins and sugars in the forage.

Stay-Cool: contains potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate and sodium acetate (food preservatives) which breakdown to sorbic acid, benzoic acid and acetic acid within the clamp – all three acids have a strong anti microbial effect on yeasts (heating) moulds (toxins) and other undesirable organisms.

Stay-Cool enhancing bacteria brings together the tried and tested homo-fermentative bacteria used in Bioferm for over 30 years plus new innovative strain that produce bacteriocins. All the challenges are still there, but with lower risk. Stay-Cool‘s use of food preservative salts (4) plus homo fermentative bacteria is the No. 1 Choice for those challenging problems. Is a unique blend of food preservative salts which prevent the growth of harmful bacteria yeasts and moulds producing stable silage with extended face and trough life. Stay-Cool is delivered ready to use in liquid form in 1000 litre tanks, making very simple to use. Applied at between 1-2 litres for grass and maize and 2-3 litres for whole crop.

The BIG challenges to good fermentation in grass silage
  • Soil/slurry contamination will increase dramatically the number of clostridia bacteria making it almost impossible in a wet silage to get a good fermentation.
  • Carry over of dead grass from spring to 1st cut will greatly increase numbers of yeasts and fungi spores making for a more unstable silage at feed out.
  • Excessive wilting (36-48 hours) – longer wilts will encourage growth of yeast and other bad bacteria in the field (5-10 fold increase) which again makes stability at the clamp face and at feed out more of a problem.
  • Unused nitrogen (high proteins).

Multi-Cut system (4 or more cuts)
  • Greater potential from contaminates a) more cuts more potential for soil contamination b) more cuts more potential for contamination from slurry
  • Greater risks from unused Nitrogen still remaining in the grass
  • Harder to achieve dry matter of 28%+ from young leafy grass
  • Weather windows: greater risk when trying to get 4 or more windows of good weather

Traditional systems (2-3 cuts)
  • All the challenges are still there, but with lower risk.
  • Stay-Cool‘s use of food preservative salts (4) plus homo fermentative bacteria is the No. 1 Choice for those more challenging problems.

Super MV50

SCIENCE AND NATURE WORKING TOGETHER

Multi-strain bacteria Super MV-50 is specially formulated for situations requiring very low volume application rates (ie 10mls > 500mls) but can be used for standard rate applications (ie 0.5L > 2L). Super MV-50 has the same unique combination of “ELITE” strains of lactic acid producing bacteria as used in Bioferm Gold for over 30 years. They have been selected to work at their optimum efficiency during the fermentation process.

Super MV-50 bacteria multiply every 15-20 minutes ensuring complete domination over the less effecient and bad bacteria present on forage. This is confirmed by pH drop to 4.0 within hours, not days.

Lactic Acid in silage will direct rumen fermentation towards propionate, which in turn will reduce methane production (green house gas). Lower methane leads to greater efficiency.
