Maize Silage

Maize silage is very prone to heating due to high levels of soluble sugars, which are used by undesirable organisms when exposed to air. Try to achieve a dry matter of 30% to optimise digestibility of the plant and starch content.

Suitable products for whole crop treatment depend on the harvested dry mater.

Stay-Cool

Stay-Cool: contains nitrites (food preservative) which breakdown to form a gas which penetrates throughout the clamp. This gas restricts the growth of undesirable organisms (enterobacteria/clostridial) thus preserving more proteins and sugars in the forage.

Stay-Cool: contains potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate and sodium acetate (food preservatives) which breakdown to sorbic acid, benzoic acid and acetic acid within the clamp – all three acids have a strong anti microbial effect on yeasts (heating) moulds (toxins) and other undesirable organisms.

The BIG challenges to good fermentation in silage
  • Soil/slurry contamination will increase dramatically the number of clostridia bacteria making it almost impossible in a wet silage to get a good fermentation.
  • Carry over of dead material from spring will greatly increase numbers of yeasts and fungi spores making for a more unstable silage at feed out.
  • Unused nitrogen (high proteins).

Stay-Cool enhancing bacteria brings together the tried and tested homo-fermentative bacteria used in Bioferm for over 30 years plus new innovative strain that produce bacteriocins. All the challenges are still there, but with lower risk. Stay-Cool‘s use of food preservative salts (4) plus homo fermentative bacteria is the No. 1 Choice for those challenging problems. Is a unique blend of food preservative salts which prevent the growth of harmful bacteria yeasts and moulds producing stable silage with extended face and trough life. Stay-Cool is delivered ready to use in liquid form in 1000 litre tanks, making very simple to use. Applied at between 1-2 litres for grass and maize and 2-3 litres for whole crop.

Ultra-Cool

Ultra-Cool is a unique combination of Heterofermentative bacteria, designed to dominate the natural bacteria present in the forage.

Heterofermentative bacteria produce stable acids and metabolites with a broad spectrum of activity against moulds and yeasts. If these yeasts and moulds are not controlled, then they can lead to considerable spoilage and loss of nutrients. The rapid drop in pH restricts the growth of detrimental bacteria.

Lactobacillus Casei: helps to create anaerobic condition in the early stages of fermentation. This will enhance the growth of efficient strains to the detriment of undesirable organisms (yeast, mould, enterobacteria, clostridium bacteria). They are also super-efficient at converting sugars to lactic acid with minimum losses. It also produces bacteriocin as part of side chain reactions.

Lactobacillus buchneri: produces volatile acids plus bacteriocins which have specific anti-microbial properties restricting the growth of yeasts (which cause heating), moulds (which can produce toxins) and against enterobacteria and clostridium bacteria (which waste sugars and protein) and are therefore excellent for improving aerobic stability in clamp and feed out.

The hydrolytic enzyme system in Ultra-Cool is designed to breakdown fibre and produce a more open structure to enhance digestion by the rumen microbes.

Benefits

  • Delayed heating at feed out.
  • Favours an efficient fermentation by killing out undesirable organisms and therefore reducing dry matter loss.
  • Improves fibre digestion by the action of the enzymes within the clamp.
  • Reduces the production of mycotoxins which can restrict intake and lead to health problems.
  • NON-CORROSIVE
