MAIZE SILAGE

Maize silage is very prone to heating due to high levels of soluble sugars, which are used by undesirable organisms when exposed to air. Try to achieve a dry matter of 30% to optimise digestibility of the plant and starch content.

Suitable products for whole crop treatment depend on the harvested dry mater

Is a unique blend of food preservative salts in a concentrate ready to use form. These prevent the growth of harmfull bacteria yeasts and moulds to produce stable silage with extended face and trough life. It is delivered in 1000 litre IBCs and is applied at 2 litres for Maize silage.

Ultra-Cool unique combination of Heterofermentative bacteria supplying 1 X 106 cfu per gram of treated forage (1 million cfu/gram)

Heterofermentative bacteria produce stable acids and metabolites with a broad spectrum of activity against moulds and yeasts. If not controlled these can lead to considerable spoilage and loss of nutrients. The rapid drop in pH restricts the growth of detrimental bacteria. Bacteriocins are also produced which are capable of killing many undesirable organisms that are responsible for spoilage. 

The hydrolytic enzyme system in Ultra-Cool is designed to breakdown fibre and produce a more open structure to enhance digestion by the rumen microbes.

High dry matter silage such as maize silage is particularly prone to heating especially if it is lower quality (low ‘D’ Value). In situation were high dry matter grass silages are made the use of Cool-store XL would be recommended. Try to aim for a dry matter of 25%-30% as quickly as possible depending on the leafiness of the crop.
